“Accra needs more than buses” – MP pushes for full transport system overhaul as GAPTE contra-flow begins

The government of Ghana has introduced a contra-flow system for Aayalolo buses on four major routes leading into the Central Business District of Accra. This new arrangement, set to commence today, aims to alleviate heavy traffic congestion during peak hours by prioritizing the high-capacity buses for longer journeys into the city center.

The four corridors selected for the implementation are the Amasaman–Accra, Pokuase–Accra, Adenta–Accra, and Kasoa–Accra routes. These areas frequently encounter significant traffic build-up, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours. Under the new system, Aayalolo buses will be given priority for longer commutes into central Accra, while trotros and other commercial passenger vehicles will continue to operate on the shorter routes.

Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga explained that the intention behind this approach is to make optimal use of the large Aayalolo buses. By accommodating up to 80 passengers at a time, these buses can transport a large number of commuters quickly and efficiently, thereby freeing up space for shorter-distance public transport options like trotros.

Ayariga emphasized that the arrangement allows the Aayalolo buses to handle high-volume, longer-distance trips, while trotros focus on shorter journeys, enhancing overall public transport efficiency.

The government anticipates that this initiative will improve commuter movement during the busiest periods by streamlining the allocation of public transport resources. The contra-flow system is expected to reduce pressure on the road network during peak hours, contributing to a smoother and more efficient public transport experience for residents and visitors in Accra.
