500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive

A six-month trial of facial recognition technology in London's railway stations cost over £320,000 and consumed nearly 100 hours of police officers' time. The test, conducted between February and July, scanned more than half a million faces in the city's busiest transport hubs. The aim was to help catch offenders and individuals breaching court orders.

However, the trial yielded only one false match against a watchlist and no arrests. The British Transport Police (BTP) announced the extension of the trial for four more months and its expansion to include London Underground stations. Since the extension, there have been three positive, confirmed alerts of people complying with court orders.

Critics argue that the technology's use depends on the police watchlists, and without a proper legal framework and safeguards, it poses a significant invasion of privacy.
