500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive

A recent six-month trial of live facial recognition technology in London's rail stations, costing over £320,000 and consuming nearly 100 hours of police time, resulted in only one incorrect alert and no arrests. Over 500,000 faces were scanned during the trial, conducted at some of the city's busiest transport hubs. The British Transport Police (BTP) deployed the technology in 18 different locations, with equipment and staff costs totaling £320,786.

The trial aimed to help apprehend offenders and those breaching court orders. However, the technology's effectiveness has been questioned, with one expert suggesting it is unclear whether the use of the technology is proportionate and appropriate. Despite this, British Transport Police have announced plans to extend the trial for an additional four months and expand the deployments to include London Underground stations.
