US President Donald Trump anticipates further talks with Iran, according to Axios. In a telephone conversation, Trump stated that the Iranians want to reach an agreement, but it is not the one he desires; it might have been the one they agreed upon a year ago. The Iranians have strayed from the path, Trump suggested regarding a recent Iranian proposal that the US president had previously rejected.

Axios reports that Trump expects the new negotiations for the coming week. Two regional sources confirmed to the US medium that these plans were in place, indicating that they anticipated a fresh round of indirect talks between the US and Iran as early as Monday.

New York witnessed the first direct negotiations between the warring parties of the US and Iran in several months, just days ago at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. According to Trump's negotiator Steve Witkoff, who participated on behalf of the US, the round of talks took place through intermediaries. Shortly thereafter, a new Iranian proposal for reopening the Hormuz Strait emerged, which Trump rejected on Saturday, stating that it was unacceptable.

The proposal allegedly contained too many preconditions from the Iranian perspective, such as the lifting of extensive sanctions, according to US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.
