“We’ll attend govt’s meeting if time permits us” – PRETAG says amidst strike action

The Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has stated it will attend a meeting scheduled by the government today, provided its members have the time to do so. PRETAG Vice President Adokwei Ayikwei Awulley emphasized the union's positive stance towards the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, with their primary focus on the implementation of previously agreed-upon agreements.

In the context of the ongoing teacher union strike, Awulley expressed the unions' anticipation for the implementation of the document finalized on August 31, 2026. The teachers are currently on strike due to stalled negotiations for a new Collective Agreement, despite the expiration of the existing one and the expectation that the process would have concluded by June 2026.

Additionally, they are demanding automatic placement for newly promoted teachers who completed aptitude tests in December 2025 and February 2026. The failure to implement the agreement between the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service and the CAGD has left affected teachers without proper salary scale placement and arrears dating back to January 2026.

Awulley reiterated the unions' readiness to engage with the government, highlighting the need for measures to ensure teachers in deprived areas receive appropriate allowances by the end of September. He also expressed disappointment that President John Mahama's pre-election promises to the teacher unions have not been fulfilled.

Awulley stressed that if the government is committed to reaching an agreement and implementing outstanding commitments, the unions are prepared to engage.
