On Monday, September 28, 2026, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the newly renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum located in Madurai. The CM honored the statue of Mahatma Gandhi by placing a garland on it and conducting a thorough inspection of the renovated premises. The renovation project was executed by the Heritage Wing of the Public Works Department, and its total cost amounted to ₹10.25 crore.

Originally, the Gandhi Museum was Rani Mangammal's summer palace from the 17th century, which later served as the Collector's Bungalow and Judges' Residence during the British rule. Post-independence, in 1955, the Tamil Nadu government gifted the palace to the All India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, and it was subsequently converted into a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The museum was inaugurated in 1959 and currently houses 14 of Gandhi's personal belongings, including the blood-stained cloth from his attire.

The renovation work commenced in October 2022, and ₹6 crore was initially allocated for the same. Following a request from the museum authorities, an additional ₹4 crore was granted for further infrastructure improvements.
