UK airbase terror suspects released on bail

Five British nationals in their 20s, all residents of London, have been released on bail after being arrested in connection with a suspected terrorism plot near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The men, arrested with suspected explosives, were apprehended on Sunday near three white vans blocking the road, prompting a member of the public to raise the alarm.

Police maintain an open mind regarding the plot's nature, investigating the possibility of a planned attack carried out by proxies or individuals working for a foreign state, rather than solely motivated by terrorism. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, the national head of counterterrorism policing, emphasized that the investigation was not yet concluded.

The suspects remain under investigation, with strict conditions imposed on their movement and communication. The Iranian Embassy in the UK dismissed speculation regarding Iran's involvement, calling it "unfounded and malicious". Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also downplayed any link to Iran, confirming the US President's assertion that the suspects had been monitored.

In response to the arrests, the UK has raised its national terrorism threat level to "severe" from "substantial", indicating a highly likely terrorist attack within six months. This decision follows a series of anti-Semitic incidents in north London and the investigation of potential links to Iran, which has denied involvement in recent attacks or plots in Britain.
