Trump confirms meeting with Anthropic’s Amodei, repeats dismissal of AI fears

US President Donald Trump announced plans for a dinner meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Sunday night, but reiterated his stance against curbing AI development. Trump highlighted his belief that stringent regulations could allow China to surpass the United States in AI advancement, emphasizing that the nation is currently ahead in technology.

Though he acknowledged Amodei's apprehension about rapid AI progress, Trump prioritized maintaining their lead over China. Trump, speaking to Fox News during the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois, stated that the US is just a year and a half ahead of China in technological advancements. The dinner with Amodei follows calls from rival AI CEOs, including those from OpenAI, Google's DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI, for a slowdown in AI development.

Despite the growing calls for federal intervention following incidents involving rogue AI agents, Trump dismissed these concerns, stating he doesn't worry about such issues. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also expressed interest in meeting Trump to discuss AI, emphasizing the necessity of regulations to ensure safety and monitoring in the field.
