Three undeclared guns hidden in personal effects from US intercepted at Tema Port

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has warned importers to closely examine the contents of shipments they bring into the country, following the discovery of a concealed assault rifle, two pistols, and 610 rounds of ammunition at Tema Port. The consignment originated from the United States and underwent inspection at the Golden Jubilee Terminal on September 25, 2026.

Customs officers uncovered the weapons during a routine examination when two officers requested a more thorough search. The firearms, ammunition, and related accessories had not been declared to the Customs. According to Deputy Commissioner Florence Asante of the GRA, the seizure is part of intensified screening and physical examination of goods at the country's ports of entry and exit to prevent the illegal importation of prohibited and restricted items.

Ghana's customs regime classifies arms and ammunition as restricted goods, requiring importers to obtain a permit from the Ministry of the Interior. The Arms and Ammunition Act 1972 (NRCD 9), as amended, prohibits the import or export of firearms and ammunition without prior authorization. Asante cautioned importers who handle goods on behalf of others to verify the contents of the consignment before accepting them, emphasizing that unknowingly accepting illegal items could result in legal consequences.

She stressed that failing to know what a consignment contains does not exempt an importer from breaking the law. Asante advised importers to ensure they possess a license to import such items and declare them accurately to avoid legal repercussions.
