The Blues Are Smart to Be Patient with Adam Jiricek

When St. Louis Blues defenseman Tyler Tucker sustained a knee injury, some fans speculated that it might create an opening for Adam Jiricek to join the team. Jiricek, the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, has had an impressive training camp following a strong 2025-26 season with the Brantford Bulldogs. Standing at a large size and a right-shot defenseman, Jiricek appears primed for the vacant 7th defenseman role.

However, the Blues opted to send Jiricek to the AHL on Friday, opting to retain veteran defenseman Calle Rosen for the position. The move reduced the training camp roster to 28 players. Assigning Jiricek to the AHL is an appropriate decision for the Blues, as it affords him the opportunity to play every game. The Blues’ right side of the blue line is well-established with Logan Mailloux, Colton Parayko, and Brandon Carlo, making Jiricek’s spot uncertain for now.

Young players should not be forced to sit and watch games. The Blues cannot afford another slow start to the season. Jiricek’s time will come, and it should arrive soon. The Blues intend to place him in a situation where he capitalizes on any opportunity that presents itself.
