Shettima returns to Nigeria after leading delegation at UNGA 81

Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to Nigeria on Monday after leading President Bola Tinubu's delegation at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, US. Shettima left Abuja on September 20 after the President instructed him to head Nigeria’s delegation for the annual global event. According to a media statement, Shettima presented Tinubu’s national address at the General Debate, where Nigeria reiterated its demand for UN Security Council reforms.

The President emphasized the need for a more equitable global order, urging Nigeria for permanent African representation on the council, fairer global financing, enhanced climate support, and stronger multilateral collaboration. At an Africa Minerals Strategy Group meeting, Tinubu called for African nations to shift from exporting raw minerals to focusing on processing, manufacturing, and value addition.

Shettima also championed education during a high-level financing event organized by Nigeria and Italy, expressing commitment to the Global Partnership for Education's $5 billion financing campaign. He met with Nigerians living abroad, stressing their contributions to national development and discussed development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace, and security with new ECOWAS Commission leadership and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
