Roti canai maker charged in Kota Tinggi court with murder of five‑year‑old niece at Tanjung Sedili river

Abadi Mohd Yasro, a 37-year-old roti canai maker, has been charged in the Magistrate's Court in Kota Tinggi with the murder of his five-year-old niece, Putri Nur Affiya Qhalhesya Shahrul. The crime allegedly occurred on September 21 at around 8:20am in Tanjung Sedili's river. The charge sheet alleges that Abadi threw his niece into the river, leading to her death.

The offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code can result in either the death penalty or a 30- to 40-year prison term, with at least 12 strokes of whipping if the death penalty is not handed down. Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Nuraini Mohd Shapee requested that Abadi be referred to Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru, for a mental health assessment.

The case was adjourned until November 26 for the accused's medical examination and for the submission of the post-mortem report. Police Chief Supt Yusof Othman reported that Abadi allegedly threw the victim into the river before engaging in a chase while armed with a machete. Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 9:30 am, and upon arrival, they encountered a struggle with the suspect, resulting in a police officer sustaining injuries. Abadi was subsequently arrested.
