Roti canai maker charged in Kota Tinggi court with murder of five‑year‑old niece at Tanjung Sedili river

A roti canai maker named Abadi Mohd Yasro, 37, has been charged with the murder of his five-year-old niece Putri Nur Affiya Qhalhesya Shahrul in Tanjung Sedili, Kota Tinggi. The incident allegedly took place at the Tanjung Sedili river on September 21 around 8:20 am. The charge sheet, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, could result in the death penalty or a prison sentence between 30 and 40 years, along with at least 12 lashes if the death penalty is not imposed.

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Nuraini Mohd Shapee, the accused should be referred to Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru for a mental health assessment. The judge scheduled a medical examination for the accused on November 26 and the submission of the post-mortem report. Police officer Yusof Othman stated that the man allegedly threw his niece into the river before engaging in a violent chase with a 40-year-old man, armed with a machete.

Police received a report of the incident at approximately 9:30 am, resulting in a struggle with the suspect and injuries to an officer. The suspect was subsequently arrested.
