Re-released Avengers: Endgame snaps up North American box office lead

The re-release of Avengers: Endgame is currently leading in North American box office sales ahead of the planned December 18 debut of Avengers: Doomsday. The 2019 superhero film earned US$26 million (S$33 million) in North America over the weekend, contributing to a global total of US$86 million. Avengers: Endgame holds the title of the second-highest grossing film ever, with worldwide earnings of US$2.8 billion, thanks to its ensemble cast featuring Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, and Scarlett Johansson.

This move aims to generate excitement for the upcoming film, as the new release includes four new post-credit scenes setting up Avengers: Doomsday. Sony's Resident Evil took second place in North America, with an estimated US$23.3 million in its first two weeks, totaling US$196 million globally. Meanwhile, Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt and his combat dog, earned US$20 million in its opening weekend on the continent.

Also debuting was Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson as a reality TV host based on the mid-2000s show To Catch A Predator, which brought in US$19.2 million for A24. Forgotten Island, an animated family film, underperformed with just US$12.8 million in its opening weekend, according to veteran industry watcher David A. Gross. Despite the film's positive reviews, Gross expects it to perform better overseas to offset domestic losses.
