Protect the school calendar while we address your concerns – Haruna Iddrisu appeals to striking teachers

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is urging striking teacher unions to resume teaching as he works with key government officials to protect the school calendar. The unions have declared a strike, demanding action on three key issues: the delay in negotiating a new Collective Agreement, the failure to automatically place newly promoted teachers on their appropriate salary scales, and the non-implementation of the Deprived Area Allowance.

The strike, which began on September 25, has left classrooms empty across the country, with some schools forced to close entirely in the Ashanti Region. The Minister welcomed the unions' leadership, emphasizing the need to keep the academic calendar running smoothly while addressing their concerns. The Minister noted that the Ministry of Education, along with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, must collaborate to find a solution.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers accused the government of acting in bad faith, citing persistent delays in addressing their demands.
