After 70 years together, Dr Mahathir weeps as Dr Hasmah laid to rest

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — After seven decades together, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wept today as he bid farewell to his late wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali. The former prime minister, who relied on a motorized wheelchair and wore an oxygen tube, remained by her side throughout the funeral rites. The somber ceremony unfolded at various locations, including the family residence, As-Syarif Mosque, and Pusara Negara, the National Cemetery in Putrajaya.

Dr Mahathir, visibly saddened, gazed at his wife's remains during the mosque prayers before joining the congregation for burial prayers. Upon reaching the cemetery, he watched as her remains were placed in the burial plot, and he wept beside her grave before taking one last look at the woman who had been his life companion for seven decades.

Tun Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah were more than just a former prime minister and his spouse; they were beloved figures who won the hearts of many Malaysians. Dr Siti Hasmah, known for her warmth and affection, was often seen by her husband's side, providing unwavering support throughout his life and political career. The couple, married on August 5, 1956, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last month. Dr Siti Hasmah passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) this morning at the age of 100.
