Pink ODI: How Nono Zwane rose above cultural stigmas, beat cancer and ran Comrades Marathon

The annual Pink ODI cricket match between the Proteas and Australia in Johannesburg on Sunday served a dual purpose, raising awareness for breast cancer while honoring breast cancer survivor Nono Zwane. As a tribute, each South African player replaced their surname on the back of their shirt with the name of a breast cancer fighter or survivor.

Captain Temba Bavuma bore the name Nono in honor of the survivor, who attended the game to share her journey of recovery. Zwane's battle with breast cancer began at the age of 36 when she was diagnosed with Stage 2B breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, experiencing many moments of uncertainty about her future.

However, her faith, family, and the support of others helped her through the toughest times. Now, Zwane sees her journey differently, emphasizing that she is not defined by cancer but by the life she chose to lead after her recovery. In 2026, she completed the 86km Comrades Marathon, symbolizing not just a race but a testament to life, purpose, strength, and new dreams that can emerge even after enduring cancer's trials.

Through her story, Zwane encourages others to maintain belief and forward momentum, urging them never to underestimate the possibilities that can arise despite life's greatest challenges. Cricket South Africa announced its goal to raise approximately R2 million from the match, with all funds directed towards the Breast Care Unit at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, which annually diagnoses and treats around 350 new breast cancer patients, providing essential care to those without private insurance.
