Perak seeks RM1.4b in Budget 2027 for key water infrastructure

IPOH, Sept 28 — Perak is anticipating at least RM1.4 billion in the upcoming Federal Budget to finance crucial water supply infrastructure, specifically a project aimed at transferring water from Sungai Perak to Bukit Merah. This initiative, prioritized by the Perak Economic Planning Unit and presented to the Finance Ministry, aims to support farmers frequently impacted by drought.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad highlighted this project as a key focus in the state's submission to the federal government. Saarani mentioned that if surplus water is available post-project, there might be consideration for selling treated water to Penang, with the primary goal of addressing water shortages in Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park and supporting local farmers.

The project is projected to commence around 2030 or 2031 if on schedule, involving two main components: infrastructure such as pumps and water tunnels, and financing through the federal government's Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry or Khazanah Air Perak, a consortium of state and private entities. Saarani emphasized the urgency of this infrastructure development, noting the significant cost and the potential increase in expenses if delayed.

Additionally, the state government has prioritized urgent needs within schools, including constructing additional buildings for simultaneous Year One enrollment and addressing dilapidated facilities. Saarani also stressed the need for new schools in rapidly developing areas to accommodate new housing projects and ensure single-session educational environments for students.
