Penang leaders’ exchange shows Umno’s dilemma with PH, says analyst

Recent remarks from two Penang Umno leaders reveal a dilemma faced by the party as it navigates its relationship with Pakatan Harapan (PH), according to an analyst.

Rashidi Zinol, the sole BN representative in Penang's government, advocated for continued collaboration between the two coalitions, stating it would be constructive and advantageous for the state. However, Hilmi Elias, the Penang Umno Youth chief, rejected Zinol's assertion, asserting it did not reflect the broader party leadership's stance.

Ahmad Zaharuddin, a consultant with Global Asia Consulting, explained that Umno is attempting to uphold its principles while simultaneously maintaining ties with PH. This presents a pivotal challenge for the party.

Despite Umno's desire to unify Malays, it remains a constituent part of the PH-led federal government. The party is faced with the delicate task of safeguarding its identity while exploring every feasible avenue.

The BN and PH share federal alliances, though tensions arose after BN joined forces with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Negeri Sembilan's recent polls. Earlier this month, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi declared no prospect of cooperation between his coalition and PH, citing BN's inability to govern independently following the last general election.

Trust remains a significant obstacle between the two coalitions. Syaza Shukri, a professor at International Islamic University Malaysia, noted that despite Umno's emphasis on Malay unity at its recent assembly, numerous questions surrounding the leadership's strategy remain unanswered. One such question pertains to whether an alliance between Umno and PAS could bolster the party's electoral prospects in the upcoming election.
