Once a pro fighter, AJ ‘Pyro’ now fights for animals in need

Jumat Lias Mansor, widely known as AJ “Pyro” in his spare time, fights a different battle. While his athletic career flourished in mixed martial arts, a disciplined MMA fighter, his heart now beats for Sabah’s stray animals. The 52-year-old, a former Malaysian national rugby player and silat athlete, has transformed his 2013 ONE Featherweight Malaysia Tournament victory into a mission to help stray cats and dogs in Kota Kinabalu.

Each day, he feeds over 30 animals, rescues the injured, and manages a trap-neuter-release-manage (TNRM) program to control the stray population. His dedication extends beyond Kota Kinabalu, with visits to Kudat and Keningau, where he continues his compassionate work. Despite his muscular exterior, AJ’s commitment to these creatures can cost him up to RM5,000 a month, and his own physical struggles from past sports injuries only amplify the challenge.
