Mohamad Hasan urges stronger Asean connectivity, eyes freer region with EU‑style movement

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan urged stronger connectivity among Asean member states to create a more open and integrated region, hinting at the possibility of free movement akin to that in the European Union (EU) over the next 10 to 12 years. During a gathering with the Malaysian diaspora, Mohamad emphasized that while such aspirations may not be fully realized due to differences in policies and laws among member states, the effort should be viewed as a long-term process demanding preparation and gradual change.

He noted that Malaysia must prepare its people, especially by improving the education system for the younger generation, to compete effectively in a more open Asean. In a joint press conference with Malaysian media, Mohamad stated that Asean should continue to play the role of a middle power amidst global geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

He highlighted that the international community increasingly looks to Asean to make its voice heard due to its strong position, ability to articulate a common global position, and significant economic potential.
