Meta hires MongoDB CEO Desai to spearhead enterprise AI business

Meta has announced plans to build a new enterprise business around its AI models and agents, hiring MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to lead the effort. The new Meta Enterprise Platform aims to offer businesses and developers the technology Meta built for its consumer apps and advertisers, enabling them to deploy it within their own operations.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, described the enterprise AI initiative as a "next major pillar" of the company's business, alongside advertising and consumer apps. Desai, who stepped down from MongoDB in November of the previous year, will serve as the Chief Enterprise Platform Officer and report directly to Zuckerberg.

The immediate question for developers is what they can build with the new Meta Enterprise Platform. Zuckerberg revealed that Meta will provide its full technology stack, starting with the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API, and Muse Code. Muse, introduced earlier this month, is a personal AI agent for consumers, while the Meta Business Agent handles customer interactions for businesses on Meta's platforms.

Muse API and Muse Code are the products most directly aimed at developers, positioning them in competition with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Meta has not disclosed enterprise pricing, general availability dates, or service terms for Muse API or Muse Code, leaving developers to scrutinize the terms as they may impact system stability. While Meta has released open weights for its Muse Glimmer model and promised an open-weights version of Muse Spark, it has not yet addressed these terms for the enterprise platform.

Llama, Meta's own model family, does not appear in Meta's description of the new enterprise stack, and it is unclear whether Llama will be part of the platform. Meta began charging developers for one of its models in July, but the open-weights option for Muse Spark remains unclear.
