La Cala Lions’ fourth Memory Day gives children facing cancer a day they will never forget

On the fourth annual Memory Day at Miraflores Tennis Club in Mijas, the La Cala Lions organized a special day for children battling cancer and other serious illnesses. Wynson Beswick, a club president and grandmother, once again took charge, turning months of fundraising efforts into a day filled with joy and memories for the young participants and their families. This event, inspired by the desire to give children experiences rather than just toys, aimed to create lasting memories that would stay with them forever.

Volunteers from the Lions club and their friends set up various stalls, kept the barbecue running, and ensured every child left with a gift voucher. Organisations such as Fundación Olivares, AECC, and ADIMI supported the event by bringing families they work with. Andrés Olivares, who initiated the foundation after losing his son Luis to leukaemia, praised earlier editions as a "marvellous thing" for families to share a beautiful day together.

Activities included playing on an inflatable slide in the swimming pool, duck fishing, shuffleboard, painting bags, and trying the bodhrán. A magician entertained the crowd, while parents enjoyed the shade. Over a hundred people attended last year, and this year's gathering kept the same vibrant and happy atmosphere. Since its inception, La Cala Lions have raised well over €1.5 million for various local causes, including previous Memory Days and the Percy Pig bar crawl fundraiser.
