Kyle Whittingham says some Michigan football penalties 'drive me nuts'

Kyle Whittingham, Michigan's head coach, has expressed frustration with the team's excessive penalty rate. Over the past few games, Michigan has committed eight or more penalties, which often stall offensive drives and prolong defensive ones. This trend began after just two such occurrences in the previous four seasons. The issue is particularly troublesome as it affects time of possession, team morale, and ultimately, the final score.

While Whittingham acknowledges that some penalties are inevitable, he is particularly annoyed by unnecessary fouls, such as the eight personal fouls committed by the Wolverines in their first month of the season. An example of this is Zeke Berry's unnecessary roughness penalty, which cost Michigan a hard-fought win against Iowa.

Whittingham emphasizes the importance of coaching and decision-making to rectify the problem, but it remains a work in progress. Additionally, the team's injured offensive line, which includes John Henry Daley and Blake Frazier, could potentially result in yet another change in formation for their upcoming game against Minnesota.
