Kyle Whittingham on Michigan's start: 'We're 3-1, feel like we are 0-4'

As Michigan enters the fifth week of the college football season, the team sits at a 3-1 record overall, but a 0-1 record in the Big Ten conference. Head coach Kyle Whittingham admits that, while the Wolverines currently have a winning record, his perception is quite different. During Monday's press conference, Whittingham stated, "We're 3-1. I feel like we're 0-4." He explained that this feeling could change with just one more play.

The last play that kept Michigan from achieving a 4-0 record occurred last weekend against Iowa. With only two seconds remaining, Iowa scored a 16-yard touchdown that made the score 19-14 in favor of the Hawkeyes. Michigan's Reece Vander Zee managed to catch the ball for the score as time expired, making it a 4-3 loss. Whittingham mentioned that Michigan was just one play away from a 2-2 record, which refers to the controversial ending in the season opener against Western Michigan.

The Wolverines appeared to have pulled off an upset, but due to a difference in the game clock shown on TV and the one on the field, Michigan converted a Hail Mary touchdown to secure the victory.

Despite the recent win, Whittingham sees several areas that need improvement. He praises the offensive line and wide receiver Bryce Underwood, who has thrown for 780 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions, along with 192 yards on the ground. However, Whittingham believes that the team still needs to clean up penalties, red zone execution, and turnover margin.
