KMA Transport Unit cautions drivers against unapproved fares

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a warning to transport drivers, urging them to refrain from charging unauthorized fares. If found guilty, offenders will face arrest, prosecution, and potential vehicle impoundment. Head of the KMA Transport Department, Mr. Randy Wilson, addressed the matter during a forum organized by the Assembly, aimed at addressing sector challenges and improving operations.

The KMA holds quarterly meetings with transport operator leaders to discuss issues and policies. The recent meeting was prompted by the need to engage operators before the Christmas period. Charging unapproved fares is a punishable offense, with offenders' vehicles previously impounded and owners fined on the spot. Moving forward, the Assembly plans to prosecute violators, publish their names for deterrence, and monitor lorry stations for compliance.

Drivers must calculate the approved eight percent fare increment based on the existing approved fare, not a new driver-imposed fare. Stations that have arbitrarily raised fares should revert to approved rates and apply the correct eight percent increment, or face legal consequences. Drivers are advised to abide by the law, ensure their vehicles have KMA stickers for approved destinations, and avoid having their vehicles impounded.
