Kerala to double tourism revenue in 5 years, carrying capacity checks: Minister PC Vishnunadh

Kerala aims to double its tourism revenue from Rs 45,000 crore to Rs 90,000 crore within five years, according to Tourism Minister PC Vishnunadh. The state recorded a record 2.5 crore domestic tourist arrivals in 2025, a 12.63% increase from the previous year, but foreign tourist arrivals remain below pre-Covid levels at 8.2 lakh.

Vishnunadh noted a shift in foreign tourist composition, with Arab tourists showing significant growth. The government plans to convert tourism into an industry by streamlining approval processes and offering benefits akin to those for MSMEs. They aim to develop 20 new destinations in a year and 100 over the next five years, starting with sustainable initiatives in places like Kumarakom.

A carrying capacity study is being conducted for overcrowded locations like Munnar and Alleppey to ensure responsible tourism. The government is also exploring new markets like the Arab world, Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore, and pushing for cruise tourism. While tourism is a state subject, the minister expressed hope for additional support from the Centre through schemes like Swadesh Darshan and 'One State, One Destination'.
