J&K Assembly passes resolution demanding full statehood

On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly adopted a resolution urging the prompt reinstatement of full statehood to the Union Territory. The resolution was introduced by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and sparked intense debates between the ruling and opposition parties. BJP legislators walked out in protest of certain provisions.

The resolution underwent ten amendments, with eight aiming to expand its scope to incorporate the restoration of the state's special status that existed prior to August 5, 2019. However, BJP lawmakers contested the inclusion of references to the state's pre-August 2019 status, triggering heated exchanges before the party members ceased attending the session.

The resolution's passage reflects the Omar Abdullah government's persistent push for restoring Jammu and Kashmir's full statehood, which was replaced by a Union Territory status in August 2019.
