India led the list of sending countries with 31% of Canada's international students, comprising nearly one in three of the 6,91,215 students studying across all levels in 2025. China came in second with 12%, followed by Nigeria and the Philippines at 5% each, and France at 3%. The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) reported these figures based on study permit data from 200 colleges, universities, schools, and educational organizations across Canada.

Despite a significant decline of 33% in the number of international students between 2023 and 2025, Canada still accounted for 11% of globally mobile international students. Indian students' top priorities for choosing Canada were safety, inclusion, and cultural diversity. Chinese students valued immigration pathways, while students from Nigeria and the Philippines prioritized employment opportunities.

In terms of education levels, colleges and undergraduate programs collectively accounted for 56% of international students, with 30% attending CEGEPs and undergraduate institutions, 26% pursuing bachelor's degrees at universities, 24% enrolled in K-12 or Quebec vocational programs, and 14% engaging in university graduate studies.

Geographically, Ontario hosted the largest number of international students at 286,610, constituting 42% of Canada's total. British Columbia followed with 151,735 students (22%), and Quebec accounted for 103,190 students (15%). Collectively, these three provinces hosted 78% of Canada's international students.

The fields of study also showcased a concentration, with STEM accounting for 42% of international students, business at 31%, and social sciences at 14%. The remaining fields had much smaller shares. Hospitality and tourism and fine arts each took up 3%, trades and vocational programs 2%, and ESL/FSL programs 1%.
