Hungarian parliament suspends immunity for PM Magyar, two Orban-era ministers

Hungary's parliament has removed Prime Minister Péter Magyar's parliamentary immunity in connection with a theft case. The motion passed unanimously, with no abstentions. The authorities can now investigate Magyar on suspicion of theft. The case emerged from a heated altercation in a Budapest nightclub in the summer of 2024. Magyar, then a member of the European Parliament, was filmed arguing with a patron who was recording him.

In a fit of rage, Magyar snatched the man's phone and threw it into the Danube. Miraculously, the phone was recovered by divers later. Hungarian prosecutors requested in September 2024 for Magyar's immunity to be lifted, but their plea was denied. The case was re-opened in May 2026 after Magyar became Hungary's prime minister. Magyar accused the man of being a "provocateur hired by those in power" and claimed he stopped the man from harassing club-goers.

He insisted the case was politically motivated and blamed prosecutors for prolonging his predecessor Viktor Orbán's "mafia state."
