Hospital AI billing tools added $942 million in costs for Blue Cross insurers

Insurers are facing a $1 billion increase in medical costs due to the use of AI in hospital documentation and patient care, according to a report from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). The organization discovered that AI was scanning through vast amounts of data to identify potential secondary ailments, leading to higher insurance payouts.

While AI may improve patient outcomes by uncovering these secondary conditions, the disconnect between these diagnoses and actual treatment suggests that AI is identifying more billable conditions rather than sicker patients. BCBSA's SVP of Product and Data Science, Luke Chalker, noted this issue, stating that despite AI's effectiveness in scanning medical records and conversations, hospitals are not seeing an increase in treatment costs.

The insurer's concern is that if patients are not becoming sicker, the increased diagnoses and subsequent payouts are not justified. This has resulted in an "AI-vs-AI battle," where insurers are increasingly using AI to scrutinize claims, leading to higher compute consumption and costs. Consequently, these additional expenses may be passed on to patients through higher premiums.
