Gates presses Congress for mandatory AI safeguards

Bill Gates has called upon Congress to enforce mandatory safeguards and monitoring on advanced artificial intelligence, claiming that voluntary industry controls fall short as increasingly capable systems pose cybersecurity and catastrophic risks. Speaking on a taped NBC Meet the Press interview, Gates argued that legislation was necessary because self-regulation alone cannot provide sufficient protection.

He insisted that government and law-enforcement agencies must be part of the process in determining how powerful AI models are tested, monitored, and controlled. Gates acknowledged that mandatory oversight might add some burden for AI companies but argued it would not significantly hinder technological development. He also expressed hope that President Trump could be persuaded that common safety requirements would not undermine competition with China.

Gates emphasized that AI is powerful enough to cause massive deaths, reinforcing his argument for preventive controls rather than relying solely on corporate promises. His stance aligns with calls from several leading AI executives for stronger safety practices, despite ongoing disagreement within the technology industry about the extent of regulation needed.
