Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to meet teacher unions October 6 as strike continues

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is set to convene with pre-tertiary teacher unions on October 6 as the government strives to resolve the ongoing strike. The meeting will center on discussions surrounding the unions' collective agreement and work conditions, according to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu. Following a meeting with the teacher unions, Iddrisu urged the government to cease the strike while negotiations proceed.

The government has enlisted a validation committee, chaired by the Ministry of Employment and Labour, to verify data regarding the implementation of the 20% rural deprive allowance. This allowance is slated to commence on January 23rd, pending the approval of the data validation process. The committee will involve the teacher unions for a comprehensive representation.

However, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) dismissed the government's appeal for teachers to return to work, maintaining that the strike will persist until concrete actions are taken on their pending demands. GNAT's representatives reiterated their stance, emphasizing that mere promises are insufficient; they demand tangible results, including the payment of outstanding promotion arrears and the establishment of these arrears on teachers' payslips.
