EU defense ministers discuss financing of Ukraine's defense spending – Kallas

EU defense ministers convened in Brussels to deliberate on the financial support for Ukraine's defense expenditures, according to Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. The discourse took place during the EU Foreign Affairs Council, with a focus on the disbursement of funds allocated within the EUR 90 billion loan package scheduled for 2027.

Kallas highlighted that Ukraine may receive up to EUR 20 billion from the residual funds of the Safe Defense Initiative, aimed at personnel training. Following the ministerial meeting, Kallas emphasized the allocation of EUR 6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility by EU member states, which she described as a crucial instrument for EU aid.

The former noted that EU countries had previously agreed on the fund's allocation. Kallas expressed gratitude to the Netherlands for a recently announced contribution towards the modernization of two training centers in Ukraine, which she credited alongside support from Germany, Ireland, Denmark, and Luxembourg for advancing these projects.

Kallas underscored the necessity for Europe to undertake significant shifts in investment scales and speeds for defense, military capabilities enhancement, innovation promotion, and industrial capacity expansion to accomplish the objectives set for 2030. She further revealed plans to discuss replenishing the European Peace Facility with additional funds during subsequent stages.
