Ebi Egbe Says Nigeria Cannot Demand European-standard Football Quality from Eagles with Deficient Facilities

Ebi Egbe, a certified hybrid pitch technician and CEO of Monimichelle Sports Facilities Construction Ltd, has expressed his concerns that Nigeria cannot ask its players to meet European-standard quality in football when they are playing on African-standard facilities. Speaking after Nigeria's 2-1 comeback win against Madagascar in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, Egbe emphasized that "Every green is not a football pitch."

He warned that even if a pitch looks beautiful, it may not be suitable for elite football. Egbe emphasized that the Super Eagles must accept that "The Pitch is the 12th Player" and must be properly prepared and managed to perform at their best. He listed several key factors that a pitch must meet, such as consistent ball movement, level surface, appropriate traction, acceptable hardness, adequate shock absorption, predictable bounce, safe acceleration and direction changes, and effective drainage during heavy rainfall.

Egbe stressed that a pitch must provide consistent performance throughout a match and a season. He argued that the Super Eagles deserve a consistent football environment, and that transition to playing in different conditions abroad should give sports administrators serious concern. He concluded that the NPFL cannot be a serious development league without serious pitches, and that players cannot learn on one type of surface only to expect to reproduce that on another with different characteristics.
