Dr Hasmah Ali was a class act

Dr Hasmah Ali, who passed away at the age of 100, has been described as a "class act." Her longevity alongside her husband, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has led to speculation about her role in his prolonged health. It is not uncommon for leaders to rely on long-lived partners for emotional and public support. Similar to the case of Indonesian President Suharto and his wife, Ibu Tien, whose death in 1996 was viewed as an ill omen, Hasmah's presence during Mahathir's 22-year tenure was met with no controversy.

In contrast to other first ladies who have faced scrutiny, Hasmah managed to be visible yet inconspicuous, and supportive without appearing subordinate.

As a one of the first Malay women doctors, Hasmah's education undoubtedly contributed to her ability to maintain her composure and poise. While Kwa Geok Choo, wife of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew, demonstrated similar supportiveness without equal billing, Hasmah had a more demanding role as she frequently accompanied her husband on public occasions, such as expressing sorrow following tragedies and visiting widows of Cabinet ministers. Her genuine and understated expressions of sympathy were moving and respected.

Notably, Hasmah was often seen in public without a headscarf, which sparked no concerns about her adherence to Islamic values. This remarkable balance of public support and personal modesty has earned her the title of a "class act" in the annals of political history.
