Dr Hasmah Ali was a class act

Dr Hasmah Ali, who passed away at the age of 100, was remembered as a remarkable individual who played a significant role in the longevity of her husband, Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The two were long-serving leaders, and it was not uncommon for countries to rely on their long-lived spouses for endurance and support. Hasmah's presence during her husband's 22-year tenure as prime minister was characterized by her ability to be visible without being conspicuous and supportive without appearing as an appendage.

Her education as one of the first Malay women doctors undoubtedly contributed to her poise and strength. Similar to another long-serving leader, Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew, Hasmah had a law firm that supported her family, allowing her not to be constantly at her husband's side. Her presence was felt during public occasions that required expressions of grief and sympathy, such as the collapse of Highlands Towers in 1993 and the fire at Bright Sparklers that claimed several lives.

Hasmah's grief was genuine and evoked a moving response. What was particularly noteworthy about Hasmah was her infrequent wearing of a headscarf, which did not raise any concerns about her Muslim faith. This subtlety showcased her remarkable balance and grace.
