Defense minister vows 'corresponding measures' if DMZ blast confirmed caused by N.K. mines

SEOUL, September 28 (Yonhap) -- Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul stated on Monday that substantial and decisive actions would be taken if recent explosions within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) are confirmed to be caused by land mines placed by North Korea. The Defense Minister made this declaration during a press conference following a discussion with Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the main opposition People Power Party.

Reporters inquired about the government's reaction if it is definitively proven that North Korean land mines were responsible for the blast that occurred last Monday, south of the Military Demarcation Line in the DMZ, resulting in the severe injuries of two South Korean soldiers. Two separate blasts were involved in the incident, and it is believed to have been caused by North Korean land mines.

When questioned about a media report suggesting that soldiers had observed a North Korean wooden-box land mine near the explosion site, Kang responded, "There are also statements suggesting it was not a wooden-box land mine." The exact nature of the device remains unclear. However, an on-site investigation is currently underway, and the government promises to provide a transparent explanation once the details are confirmed.

Addressing opposition criticism that the government aims to minimize or conceal the incident, Kang emphasized that there was no deliberate delay or cover-up. "I want to reiterate that there was absolutely no intentional delay or cover-up."
