Cabinet threw out US health compact faster than anything I’ve seen – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama described the rejection of the United States health compact as the most rapid Cabinet action he has witnessed. This occurred after the document raised concerns over Ghana's pathogen profile and citizens' medical records. The Health Ministry meticulously examined the pact, which aimed to supplant funding lost when USAID assistance ceased.

Upon reviewing the document, Mahama flagged several provisions, including one mandating Ghana to surrender its pathogen profile and another requesting access to the nation's medical records. The latter demand seemed particularly perplexing, as Mahama questioned the rationale behind providing another country's medical records. Additionally, the compact demanded financial contributions from Ghana and prohibited the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) from inspecting imported medicines or medical products under the agreement.

Mahama deemed these conditions humiliating and emphasized that the Cabinet swiftly dismissed the compact, calling it "thrown out in record time." He further informed the US Ambassador that Ghana had no need for the health compact.
