2027: Sultan urges politicians to shun insults, divisive rhetoric

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, has called on politicians to refrain from insults and divisive language in their political activities. During a meeting on Monday, the Sultan received candidates from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), including Peter Obi, his running mate Senator Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, and the party's Sokoto State governorship candidate Dr Shamsu Haido, at his palace in Sokoto.

The Sultan emphasized the importance of respect for one another, unity, and avoiding abusive language that could lead to violence. He stated that while politicians have the right to present their policies and seek support, they must do so responsibly, respecting the law and differing political views. The Sultan stressed that politics should not be used to divide people or create hostility, and that the interests of Nigeria and national peace should take priority over political disagreements.

He urged political leaders, especially those seeking public office, to serve as examples and ensure their campaigns do not contribute to conflict or division. Obi expressed gratitude to the Sultan for receiving the delegation and listening to their concerns, noting that the visit was part of the delegation's political engagements with traditional and community leaders.
