BOK faces scrutiny over cybersecurity after staff data breach

The Bank of Korea (BOK) is currently under scrutiny for its cybersecurity practices following a recent hacking incident that exposed the personal data of 186 employees. According to data provided to Rep. Lee Jong-wook of the People Power Party (PPP), the breach took place between May and June when hackers infiltrated a GitHub system used for the bank's online training program.

The compromised information included the employees' names, email addresses, phone numbers, job titles, responsibilities, and passwords. The bank became aware of the breach on June 11 and promptly informed the affected staff the following day. They also notified the Personal Information Protection Commission about the incident.

The PPP lawmaker emphasized that the BOK should not dismiss the leak of employees' personal data or the repeated disruptions to its websites. He called for a comprehensive review of the central bank's security system and the implementation of measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. The BOK has acknowledged the incident and taken the necessary steps to address the issue, including notifying the affected employees and informing the relevant regulatory body.
