BoG Governor appoints Second Deputy Governor Matilda Asante-Asiedu as rep on GoldBod board

GoldBod has dismissed speculations that Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama's decision to stop personally serving on its governing board indicates a disagreement between the two institutions. Media Relations Officer Prince Kwame Minkah stated that the Governor's move does not imply any problems or wrongdoing at GoldBod. Dr Asiama stopped serving on the GoldBod board five months prior to his remarks at the latest Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

According to Minkah, the Governor chose to nominate his second deputy, Matilda Asante-Asiedu, to represent him on the board, as allowed under Section 4(e) of the GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140). This arrangement is not unique to GoldBod, as other ministers have also appointed representatives to serve on the board. For instance, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson nominated Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem, and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, initially served personally but later appointed Chief Director Marcus Haligah due to his busy schedule.

Minkah clarified that Dr Asiama had served on the board himself when GoldBod was established in 2025, and his recent nomination was a change in representation, not a withdrawal from the GoldBod board. He denied claims that the Governor's absence from the board suggested rot within GoldBod or a dispute between the two institutions.

Minkah emphasized that GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana maintain close collaboration, with the GoldBod being a significant source of foreign exchange for the country. He urged the public to disregard suggestions of a rift between the two institutions based on the change in board representation.
