Benitatchell brings its dramatic cliffside fishing heritage to life in immersive new experience

Benitatchell’s coastal town is bringing its dramatic cliffside fishing heritage to life through an immersive digital experience. The ‘Les Pesqueres de Cingle’ project recreates traditional fishing platforms using aerial drone photography, photogrammetry, and 3D modelling. Visitors can explore these once-dangerous sites without the risk, accessing the virtual tour via smartphones, tablets, or computers in six languages.

The experience includes Braille signage, professional narration, and interactive information points explaining the fishing platforms' history.

The municipality has also installed QR codes at three key locations—La Taula, La Branca, and El Moraig—to allow visitors to access the virtual experience on-site. For those who cannot reach the sites safely, Benitatchell has introduced six Meta Quest 3S virtual reality headsets that simulate a descent down the cliffs, narrated by a local fisherman. This innovative approach aims to preserve the town's unique heritage while ensuring its accessibility.

The project, funded by NextGenerationEU and Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, is now open to the public, providing a digital model for other Mediterranean coastal communities with hard-to-access heritage sites.
