Bangkok floodwaters begin to ease after torrential rains affect 700,000 people

Bangkok, Thailand experienced ongoing flooding from continuous rainfall over the weekend, though some areas still remained submerged on Monday. The Bangkok Flood Control Center reported that the flooding affected approximately 700,000 people, or 329,000 households. Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej declared a flood emergency across all 50 districts, prioritizing assistance for vulnerable residents such as the elderly and those with disabilities.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited a heavily flooded housing estate in Bang Kapi district to help distribute relief supplies. Despite intermittent downpours, some residents continued their daily activities, walking through waterlogged streets and using boats to navigate through flooded areas. For one maid, the flooding forced her to evacuate her pets and leave her job due to the uncertain circumstances.

The flooding disrupted supply chains and caused panic buying of food, while Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport faced baggage handling issues due to insufficient staffing and baggage cart problems. The government advised various entities to assess their operational needs, while Thailand's meteorological agency warned of potential flash floods, river overflows, and landslides in northern, central, and eastern regions.
