AMD bets $8.2B that worlds matter more than words in AI

On Monday, advanced semiconductor maker AMD announced it is acquiring artificial intelligence startup World Labs for roughly $8.2 billion. The transaction, expected to close by year-end upon regulatory clearance, will enable AMD to create the next generation of AI hardware, software, and systems. AMD's CEO Lisa Su stated in a statement that comprehending how AI models are evolving is crucial for building the platforms necessary for future AI advancements.

World Labs, founded in early 2024, focuses on developing spatial-intelligence models, also known as "world models," which offer a distinct approach to artificial intelligence compared to large language models (LLMs). These models simulate 3D environments derived from text, image, and video inputs, aiming to solve problems by envisioning the environment and working through them.

World Labs' leader, Fei-Fei Li, who co-founded the company, will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to Su. Li expressed that joining AMD will provide her team with the resources and engineering expertise to accelerate research and define the infrastructure required for the forthcoming era of AI.

This acquisition follows AMD's recent purchase of Taalas, a firm specializing in high-performance AI chips capable of processing over 17,000 tokens per second. While the Taalas deal emphasized hardware, the World Labs acquisition could significantly impact AMD's future by providing the company with an in-house AI development team, enhancing its ability to attract enterprises and guide the development of next-generation hardware.

The move is also a strategic hedge against the potential limitations of large language models, which have driven the current AI boom. Fei-Fei Li has expressed skepticism towards the dominance of LLMs, emphasizing that true intelligence must be grounded in the real world.
