AMD Acquires Fei-Fei Li's World Labs For $8.2 Billion

AMD has struck a deal to acquire Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for approximately $8.2 billion in stock, marking the chipmaker's second-largest acquisition to date. This acquisition will provide AMD with a significant presence in the field of "world models" that create 3D simulations of environments, which are crucial for developing robotics and other AI applications grounded in physical reality.

AI experts anticipate that world models will play a pivotal role in advancing robotic technology and other AI systems requiring real-world interaction. AMD intends to maintain World Labs' independence from its core chipmaking operations until the deal is finalized later this year. The company's investment in World Labs' research will enable it to anticipate the future capabilities its AI chips may require.

World Labs was established by Fei-Fei Li, a prominent AI researcher and Stanford professor, who previously held a leadership position at Google in AI research. Li will assume the roles of AMD's chief scientist and executive vice president. During a demo presented by both Li and AMD CEO Lisa Su, the duo showcased a World Labs model named Marble, which generates a three-dimensional scene from a limited number of images.

Li emphasized that intelligent agents, such as robots, vehicles, or tools, can be trained within highly-physically accurate digital worlds before being deployed in the real world, thereby enhancing their safety.
