Aayalolo to operate contra-flow on three major Accra corridors

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has launched a contra-flow system for Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three primary routes leading to Accra's central business district. This measure, set to commence on September 29, will be in place during the busiest commuting hours - 6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 8 pm.

The affected corridors are Amasaman-Accra, Adenta-Accra, and Kasoa-Accra, all of which experience significant traffic congestion during peak times. The government intends to create dedicated contra-flow lanes for authorized Aayalolo buses to travel in a specified direction, effectively blocking private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles, and other unauthorized road users from using these lanes.

This initiative, carried out in partnership with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive, and the Department of Urban Roads, aims to enhance public transport services, reduce congestion, and provide more dependable mobility for commuters heading to and from the CBD.

The government believes this will improve service punctuality, reduce journey times, and decrease road congestion, encouraging more people to use mass public transportation and lessening the burden on private vehicles.
