UK’s Labour Party meets buoyed by Burnham but seeking concrete plans

Britain's ruling Labour Party convenes its first annual conference under new leadership from Prime Minister Andy Burnham, buoyed by his popularity but seeking concrete plans to address pressing issues. Since replacing Keir Starmer in July, Burnham has taken steps to alleviate cost-of-living pressures, including reducing electricity bills, capping bus fares, and lowering business rates.

He has also set up a "No 10 North" office in Manchester to devolve more power to cities and regions, aiming to boost GDP. However, Burnham has remained vague about plans to end homelessness, reform the welfare bill, fund social care services, reindustrialise the economy, and increase defence spending. Labour MP Paula Barker noted a positive mood at the conference, which has seen Labour gain in some opinion polls due to Burnham's higher approval ratings and the difficulties faced by the hard-right Reform UK.

Despite these gains, Labour faces challenges, as finance minister John Healey will need to navigate tight fiscal constraints during his first budget on October 28. Burnham emphasized the need to focus on providing hope to the public and outlined his vision for the country's future during his keynote speech. Recent polls show Labour at 24% support, with Reform following closely at 22%, a significant shift from previous elections where Reform had a substantial lead.
