Uber CEO says ‘really demanding’ work culture includes expecting employees to answer emails over the weekend: ‘Don’t come here if you want to coast’

The Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, has expressed a strong work ethic at his $141 billion ride-hailing company. He believes employees must be highly committed, even answering emails over the weekend. Khosrowshahi stated this on the Diary of a CEO podcast and reiterated that those who cannot meet these expectations will not be tolerated.

Uber's turnaround came under his leadership in 2017 when the company was losing billions annually. His approach includes ensuring employees send emails on Saturdays and follow up on Sundays. Despite the demanding work culture, Khosrowshahi emphasizes that employees can learn a lot and make a real impact. He adds that while hard work is crucial, it should not be a never-ending grind.

He sets boundaries for his personal time, having dinner with his family twice a week, but continues to check emails even after dinner and upon waking up. He believes flexibility can coexist with working hard, but acknowledges tradeoffs are part of life.
