Two mass shootings kill at least 27 people in South Africa

Two separate shootings in South Africa resulted in the deaths of 27 people within hours of each other, raising concerns about the country's high levels of gun violence. President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his frustration over the incidents, which occurred just days after another shooting at a house party in Durban left 11 people dead.

The circumstances surrounding the Johannesburg shootings remain unclear, but initial investigations suggest they may be linked to a turf war between illegal miners and a business rivalry. Police have obtained images of suspects and are actively pursuing them. Witnesses reported that the attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles, entered an indoor tavern and began shooting at patrons. Some of the victims were South Africans, while others were Lesotho nationals and an Ethiopian individual who was wounded.

In another incident, gunmen opened fire in a venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town, during late-night festivities on Sunday. The attack claimed the lives of 10 people and left 11 others injured. Eyewitnesses described an initially festive atmosphere that quickly turned tragic, as victims lay on the ground while the assailants fired multiple rounds. No arrests have been made in either case.

South African authorities have highlighted the pervasive nature of violent crime in the nation, despite ongoing efforts to address the issue. Crime expert Yusuf Abramjee emphasized that illegal weapons are a significant factor, calling for authorities to investigate the broader networks driving this violence. Crime is anticipated to be a crucial concern for voters during upcoming municipal elections in November, as the African National Congress faces challenges to its political dominance amid growing concerns over femicide and other forms of violence.
